About Massimo
Massimo Bertucci is an Italian cellist born into a family of musicians, where
music has always been a central part of life. He was introduced to the cello at a
very young age by his father, a cellist who studied with Rocco Filippini at the
Stauffer Academy in Cremona and with Alain Meunier at the Chigiana
Academy in Siena. From his father, Massimo received a solid technical
foundation and a deep-rooted passion for the instrument that continues to
guide his artistic path.
He completed his studies with highest distinction at the Giuseppe Nicolini
Conservatory of Piacenza under the guidance of Maestro Jacopo Di Tonno, and
subsequently continued his artistic development with Tanja Tetzlaff. He further
enriched his musical growth through numerous masterclasses with prominent
musicians such as Giovanni Sollima, Giovanni Gnocchi, David Geringas,
Maximilian Hornung, Steven Isserlis, Nicolas Altstaedt, Enrico Dindo, and Ulrich
Koella.
As a soloist, Massimo has performed in numerous concerts and collaborated
with esteemed ensembles such as the Solisti de La Scala of Milan and the
Solisti of Teatro San Carlo of Naples. He has served as principal and section
cellist under the baton of distinguished conductors including Riccardo Muti,
Enrico Dindo, and Sir Antonio Pappano, experiences that have played a key role
in shaping his orchestral sensitivity and artistic maturity.
In addition, he has worked closely with Mauro Colombis and Anna Griffiths,
Education Operations and Artist Manager at Musica Viva Australia, contributing
to educational and artistic projects within the Australian music scene.
Alongside his concert career, Massimo began teaching at the age of 18, after
having closely studied with and learned from his father Aurelio Bertucci, a
renowned cello pedagogue in Italy. From an early age, Massimo assisted his
father in lessons for younger students aged 7 to 15, both privately and at
AEMAS (Accademia Europea delle Arti e dello Spettacolo) in Naples, where he
was active from 2015 to 2022.
He later held teaching positions at secondary music institutions including the
Liceo Musicale Bruno Munari in Acerra (Naples) and the Convitto Nazionale di
Sessa Aurunca in Caserta. In these roles, he prepared students for their cello
graduation exams through individual instruction and also served as both string
section tutor and conductor of the school orchestra.
Massimo is currently Cello Tutor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – Open
Academy, University of Sydney. He also collaborates regularly with the Italian
Cultural Institute of Sydney, further strengthening his artistic and cultural
engagement on the international stage.
He is the recipient of several awards, including First Absolute Prize at the
Napolinova International Music Competition and First Absolute Prize at the City
of Airola Competition. He also received a scholarship ex aequo named in honor
of Maestro Giovanni Battista Guadagnini in Milan. He performs on a German
cello dating from circa 1870, of anonymous workmanship.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
My 8-year-old son has been learning cello with Massimo, and the experience has been very positive and smooth. Before starting lessons, my son wasn’t very interested in the cello, but since learning with Massimo, he has begun practising by himself and showing real interest and motivation.
Massimo is patient, responsible, and creates a relaxed environment where children feel comfortable and engaged. The lessons are well structured but never stressful, which makes it easy to trust him and let the child learn at their own pace.
I would definitely recommend Massimo, especially for families living in the north of Sydney. He offers private lessons at a reasonable price, and the quality of teaching is absolutely worth it.View more recommendations
