Methodology

Chinese is a very culturally rich language, my lessons will be very heavily focused on speaking as it is the heaviest contributor to culture. After assessing the level of knowledge you have of the language I will plan a learning guide for you to follow so you have mini goals to achieve and not feel lost. My ultimate goal is to help you communicate effectively in Chinese, as well as teach you slangs and slogans (a very vital part of Cantonese in particular!) to use in daily life.
My curriculum will be full of not just solid knowledge and repetitive exercises, but also interactive learning through movies, books and songs. Besides teaching you how to master the basics and rules of the language, I will teach you how to fully immerse yourself in the culture and learn to appreciate it.
If covid regulations allow, I am happy to take you on mini outings like I mentioned in my background :)

Background

Hi! I’m Alexis and I'm a 20 year old veterinary student in UQ, I have 2 years of tutoring experience and I absolutely love language! I teach beginner to expert English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

A little about myself:

I was born in Myanmar, a beautiful Southeast Asian country before I spent 14 years living in Hong Kong and learned to speak Cantonese and Mandarin among native speakers. I studied in local schools in Hong Kong so I’m also very fluent in written Chinese. My students have mostly been children from ages 1-15, with diversely different backgrounds. Besides teaching through books, I love taking my students on mini outings to really push them to use their knowledge naturally in daily life. I have lots of experience in writing, organising and participating in English dramas and musicals throughout secondary school so I definitely understand how important it is to have fun in order to learn efficiently.

Although I'm half Chinese, arriving in Hong Kong as a toddler and being put in a local school was quite a shock to me. I didn't speak a lick of Cantonese and was barely good enough at Mandarin. My mother's merciless act of throwing me into local school resulted in me mastering Cantonese in 4 months (it's so good to be a kid and learn fast!). Rest assured as I won't fly you off to Hong Kong and throw you into local school to make you learn, instead I will use my experience in learning both the Cantonese language and culture as a foreigner to help you digest and understand Cantonese to its fullest extent! What I lack in
teaching experience is personal experience of learning the language from scratch, as well as the willingness to tailor-make a curriculum that will help you learn both efficiently and happily.
I believe learning about the culture of a language helps tremendously in mastering the language itself and that’s how I make sure my students fully understand and are able to correctly apply what I teach them in everyday life.
