About Abigail

Hello! I am an English tutor with over 4 years of dedicated tutoring experience working with more than 200 students at GCSE, A-Level, and university level. I came to English tutoring from a background that included both academic study of literature and linguistics and professional writing and editing, and I bring both dimensions into every lesson — combining the analytical rigor of academic literary study with the practical, craft-focused perspective of someone who thinks carefully about writing as a discipline. I cover the full range of English content at every level: literary analysis covering prose, poetry, and drama; language analysis covering rhetoric, stylistics, and non-fiction; essay and argument writing; creative writing; and the specific examination skills required by different exam boards. I am experienced with AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, CIE, and IB English, and I always tailor my teaching to the precise requirements of each student's specific course and assessment format. My students consistently achieve significant grade improvements, but more importantly, they develop a relationship with reading and writing that goes beyond the immediate exam. Students who arrive finding analytical writing laborious and opaque leave finding it — if not effortless — at least a manageable and even satisfying challenge. That transformation is what I am most proud of in my tutoring work.

English

English is a subject where surface-level coverage — reading the texts, learning a few techniques, practising a past paper or two — produces results that plateau quickly. Real progress requires something deeper: the ability to read with genuine analytical attention, to construct arguments that are logically structured and evidentially grounded, and to write with precision and control at the level of the individual sentence as well as the overall piece. These are the skills I develop in every student I teach, and I develop them explicitly rather than hoping they emerge on their own.I begin every student relationship by understanding their relationship with language: what they read naturally and what they avoid, where their writing feels uncertain, what their previous English instruction has and has not given them. This picture shapes everything that follows. For students who struggle with analytical reading, I teach close reading as a discipline — how to slow down in front of a text, notice what is actually on the page, and draw meaning from specific choices of language and structure. For students who struggle with writing, I teach the architecture of a good argument and the craft of a well-constructed sentence alongside each other, because one without the other produces writing that is either structurally sound but clumsy, or fluent but circular.Exam preparation is a major and structured part of my work. I teach students how to plan under time pressure, how to select and deploy quotations efficiently, how to modulate the depth of their analysis based on how many marks a question carries, and how to write with genuine critical voice rather than simply summarising or paraphrasing. These skills are almost never explicitly taught in classrooms, and developing them makes an enormous difference to exam performance.
