About Tom
I have over 20 years of teaching experience, working with all language levels, from beginners to advanced, teaching directly in English.
The initial part and majority of my teaching career has been in the classroom, face-to-face, teaching groups or individuals at language institutions and at universities or on-site at work locations teaching employees in public and private sector institutes in Switzerland, Finland, Ireland and the UK. Since Covid, I have been teaching online to individuals and groups.
I first started teaching in Switzerland (2001-4), where drilling and weaving were the initial tools to present and produce language in general language learning groups. As certified language examinations were important to validate one's language skills, Cambridge examination courses were very popular; mainly First Certificate and Advanced as well as BEC exams.
Finland followed my time in Switzerland (2004-present, with a year’s break in London – 2007-8 – and Ireland – 2017-8), and having a post-graduate qualification allowed me to teach at universities in addition to the regular language groups at language schools and offices. Though language exam courses have still included the traditional Cambridge examinations, IELTS has been more popular since 2014 and I was an examiner for two-three years.
With English language examination based training (Cambridge First, Advanced and Proficiency exams), my lessons include a review of grammar, the development of vocabulary for appropriacy and use, and students are introduced to how examinations are structured through test practice to improve their performance.
When it comes to regular language development, I place an emphasis on verbal communication in context based on student needs, whether this is describing routines or using role-play to develop language and skills for travel (visiting restaurants and shopping).
Discussion practice is also useful for participants to express views and use appropriate structures in speech which have been presented in class. In such cases, topical events are useful in cross-cultural communication.
With regard to professional contexts, student requirements need to be fulfilled and material is often tailored to such needs, e.g. presentation structure and practice, using conditionals in negotiations, etc. Likewise, academic English requires structure and appropriate vocabulary in writing and speech with writing tasks for homework.
Though I haven’t taken any further CELTA courses since my initial introductory course at the beginning of my career, my experience of teaching varied levels of language learner and different personalities has provided me with a competent skillset to fulfil most tasks.
