I like assessing my students' knowledge of the topic first. I then, help students to build their knowledge. After ensuring the students are proficient in the basics, I then encourage them to move on to more complex topics. I always encourage my students to solve complicated problems by breaking the problem down into smaller chunks, trace them back to the fundamental concepts and start solving the big problem by solving each sub-problem.
