About Joseph

It all began in 1998, when my mother bought me a small book on French grammar. I learned the verb forms, and ended up at the top of my class in French! From then on, I loved languages. I visited France and Spain often, and learned Spanish too. I then lived in Spain for several months, teaching English as a foreign language to adults and children alike, in the Official Language School of Melilla. Since moving to the USA in 2019, I have taught Spanish I, II, III, Heritage Spanish, and AP Spanish Language & Culture. My AP examinees achieved results that were far above the national average, with 100% of those who took it passing. I also learned Biblical Hebrew while in college, and still use it to study the Scriptures, and I worked with Hebrew-speaking Israelis for over five years.

About the lesson

My methodology has led to language success for my students in several ways, and I'll explain it here. I like to teach you cognates, and take you from what you know to what you don't know.

If you are building a house, you are going to start with the foundation. I believe that everyone has a natural foundation for learning a new language, and that is the language which you already speak. For example, "Hola" means "Hello" in Spanish. Do you notice the similarities between the two? Both have the same consonants: h and l! Therefore, hola and hello are loosely cognates of each other: you recognize one word from the other.

Many people begin learning a language, but then they give up because everything sounds so unfamiliar and difficult. I want to reassure you that there are things in common between different languages. When you meet a new word, I can often explain its cognates. For example, creer means to believe in Spanish. Creer has many cognates: your creed is what you believe, what's credible is believable; and what's incredible is unbelievable! So there are many cognates that link creer and believe.

There are thousands of these examples, which will help you to make little connections between words in different languages, so you can remember them and go from strength to strength.
