About Sabrina

I am a native Albanian speaker that will be able to teach you everything you want to know, boost your confidence and help you with your accent in Albanian at all levels. Albanian grammar can be very tricky and hard, but together we will make it as easy as possible!

I started teaching in Albanian about 3 years ago and I also do a part-time translation job. In addition, I always offer help to translate from English to Albanian or vice versa to Albanian family and friends.

Most of my students are Albanian children that are raised in the UK and do not speak Albanian fluently, so their parents make sure to contact me, so I can teach them and I have had amazing results! In addition, partners of Albanian natives contact me, so they can communicate better with their spouse and the rest of the spouse's family, or even try to slowly - slowly teach their newborn children!

The teaching methodology is essential when it comes to learning, especially a new language, such as Albanian. When teaching, I like to refer to real life situations and encourage the student to make everyday life conversations with me, which will really affect in learning quick and easy.

The most difficult part about the Albanian language is its grammar and also the fact that one word can have a few meanings depending on the way you use it. I always try to adapt to the student's pace, in order to make sure that I am not putting so much pressure in them and also consider their feedback, to make sure I teach them to the best standard possible.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am Albanian and having lived in Albania for most of my life, I speak fluently, which enables me to teach the language at any level. I also do a part time translating job, which allows me to stay up to date with any new words/phrases. I also speak Albanian with family and friends on a day to day basis, in order to also practice the language.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

There's many people that I can think of that would be suitable to represent the language's culture, starting from many famous writers and poets, legendary figures etc., but I would emphasise the role that Skanderbeg (Skenderbeu) had in the continuity of the Albanian language, traditions and culture. Even though he was taken very young age from the Ottoman Empire, but he never forgot where he came from, so that the day he was sent by the ottomans to fight his own people (Albanians) he went against the ottoman army and protected his origin, culture, language, traditions etc, things that the ottomans always tried to assimilate. This is why Skanderbeg is a national Albanian hero.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

Albanian is quite interesting and there are many phrases that in any other language would sound funny, silly or ridiculous, but these words actually have a meaning. Examples include:
'A ha shqip? - Do you eat Albanian', which actually means 'Do you understand Albanian?'

Also, the dialect's differences, make a single word have different pronunciations, such as:
është - is (standard) can be said as: Asht & Osht, or A & O ; which for someone who is learning Albanian is hard to realise that it is the same word being said in different dialects.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Albanian is my mother tongue and in the tree of languages is one of the languages that is on a branch by itself, which proves how special and unique it is. It is not linked to any other language and I am aware that the resources to support learning the language are very limited, which is one of the reasons it pushed me to become a tutor.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty would definitely be the grammar and the pronunciation of some letters that are unique to the Albanian language.
The grammar is quite tough, eg. the verbs transform massively when the tense changes; same happens to nouns during declension. In Albanian, we also have genders for objects, depending on the ending of the word.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

During my education in Albania, I got to meet a lot of people from different regions within the country, and the dialect differences are quite visible, but I was very fluent in both dialects, and people would never be able to guess where I was from. I would speak the standard, the geg and tosk dialect depending on who I was talking to, and I was the "translator" in most conversations.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Visiting Albania & Kosovo very often, at least once a year, helps me meet different people, that speak different dialects, which has definitely perfected my knowledge on those specific dialects, allowing me to teach the standard Albanian and the 2 main dialects: Geg and Tosk.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

It's my unquestionable experience of having lived & studied in Albania for most of my life and also speaking the language on a day to day basis, whilst doing my interpreting job and also with family and friends. In addition, I actively watch Albanian TV shows, listen to the music and read educational and non educational books.
