I believe in personalising the lessons to the child to create interest. I build confidence and help the child understand that mistakes are part of the process to learning. In terms of subject knowledge, I teach the foundation of the subjects so the child is secure in the basics. Often future difficulties arise if the child doesn't have a good understanding of the basic concepts of maths, English or science.
