• 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I developed a strong interest in my chosen field, pharmaceutical chemistry, during my time at Queen Mary University, where I graduated with a first-class degree. The comprehensive coursework and exposure to various aspects of pharmaceutical science ignited my passion for this field. Additionally, my qualifications as a secondary science teacher allowed me to delve deeper into science education.
  My interest in private tutoring began in 2016 when I realized the value of one-on-one instruction in helping students grasp complex scientific concepts. Through private tutoring, I could provide personalized guidance and support to students, helping them achieve their academic goals and develop a deeper appreciation for science. This combination of academic knowledge and teaching experience has fueled my dedication to both pharmaceutical chemistry and private tutoring.

• 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I teach a range of subjects including GCSE maths, GCSE science, and A-level chemistry. I thoroughly enjoy teaching these subjects as they offer diverse opportunities for students to engage with fundamental concepts and build strong foundational knowledge.
  In particular, I have a passion for teaching chemistry, and there are several topics within this subject that I find particularly fascinating to discuss with my students. These topics include:

• 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Yes, I had a remarkable role model who inspired my career in education. My secondary maths teacher played a pivotal role in shaping my passion for teaching and my dedication to the subject. Their enthusiasm for mathematics was infectious, and they had a unique ability to make complex mathematical concepts accessible and engaging.
  My secondary maths teacher went beyond the curriculum to provide additional challenges and opportunities for us to explore mathematics. They encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, which have been invaluable in both my own learning journey and in my teaching career.
  Witnessing the positive impact that my teacher had on my classmates and me, I realized the profound influence that educators can have on students' lives. It was this inspiration that led me to pursue a career in teaching, with a particular focus on GCSE maths and science. I aspire to emulate the passion and dedication I saw in my secondary maths teacher, creating a positive and impactful learning experience for my students, just as they did for me.

• 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  While there are many important qualities that contribute to being a good tutor, if I were to highlight the three main qualities that stand out as crucial, they would be:
  
  
  Subject Knowledge: A good tutor must have a deep and comprehensive understanding of the subject matter they are teaching. Without a strong grasp of the material, it becomes challenging to explain concepts, provide accurate information, and guide students effectively. Subject knowledge serves as the foundation upon which effective tutoring is built.
  
  
  
  Effective Communication: Effective communication skills are paramount for a tutor. Being able to convey complex ideas and information in a clear, concise, and understandable manner is essential. A good tutor can adapt their communication style to match the student's level of comprehension and effectively convey concepts, answer questions, and facilitate learning.
  
  
  
  Patience: Patience is a key quality that sets successful tutors apart. Students have different learning paces and may struggle with certain concepts. A good tutor is patient and understanding, willing to explain concepts multiple times, provide additional support, and allow students the time they need to grasp the material. Patience fosters a positive and supportive learning environment.
  
  
  These three qualities work in harmony to create an effective tutoring experience. Subject knowledge ensures the tutor's credibility and expertise, effective communication bridges the gap between tutor and student, and patience ensures that the learning process is student-centered and accommodating. While other qualities are important, these three are foundational for successful tutoring.

• 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  One of the most memorable moments from my days at school was during a chemistry class when my teacher conducted a captivating experiment to demonstrate the concept of chemical reactions and the importance of safety precautions in the laboratory.
  The experiment involved the reaction between sodium and water, a well-known demonstration in chemistry. However, what made this particular demonstration memorable was the way my teacher approached it. She began by emphasizing the importance of safety goggles, lab coats, and proper lab techniques. She explained how sodium is a highly reactive element and can react violently with water, producing hydrogen gas and heat.
  As she carefully placed a small piece of sodium in a dish of water, a sudden burst of flames and a loud "pop" echoed through the classroom. It was a controlled explosion, and the sight and sound left a lasting impression on all of us. My teacher used this dramatic demonstration not only to illustrate the principles of chemical reactions but also to emphasize the critical importance of safety measures in the laboratory.
  What made this experience valuable was the way it sparked our curiosity and instilled a sense of awe and respect for the subject. It wasn't just about memorizing facts and equations; it was about understanding the real-world applications of chemistry and the consequences of not following proper procedures. This lesson stayed with me throughout my academic journey and later influenced my approach as a science teacher.
  As a science teacher today, I strive to create similar impactful experiences for my students. • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  One of the most significant challenges in teaching science, particularly subjects like pharmaceutical chemistry, is the inherent complexity of the scientific concepts involved. Topics such as organic chemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacology can be highly intricate and require a deep understanding. Simplifying these concepts without oversimplifying them, especially for students with varying levels of prior knowledge, can be a considerable challenge. Balancing depth and clarity in explanations is an ongoing task.

• 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  Teaching, for me, is not just a job but a calling. It's about helping students discover the beauty and relevance of science in their everyday lives. It's about instilling in them a sense of wonder and curiosity that extends beyond the classroom. When I see my students grasp a challenging concept, ask insightful questions, or express a newfound interest in a scientific topic, it's incredibly fulfilling. Moreover, my passion extends to the broader goal of education itself, which is to empower students with knowledge and critical thinking skills that will serve them well in their future endeavors. Whether it's helping them excel academically, nurturing their problem-solving abilities, or encouraging their creativity, I am deeply passionate about the transformative power of education.
