About Nicholas
I am a passionate and experienced English tutor with extensive experience teaching and tutoring students aged 11 - 18 year olds in secondary schools.
My approach is student-centred, with clear feedback and practical next steps. I aim to help students develop the reading, writing and exam skills they need to succeed. I teach AQA, Edexcel and OCR.
I have a First-Class BA History degree and an MA in Medieval Studies. My academic background has given me strong analytical and essay writing skills, many of which are directly transferable to English. It also gives me expertise when helping students understand the cultural and historical context of English literature.
I qualified as an English tutor in 2022 through the National Tutoring Programme. Following this, I delivered one-to-one tuition and small group classes in English at secondary schools in Manchester. In these interventions, each student's reading age improved by an average of 11 months after only 12 weeks of English tuition.
I have four years of experience tutoring English. Among GCSE students who completed multiple tuition sessions (6 or more), all achieved at least two GCSE grades higher than their expected grade.

Success in English depends on being able to read analytically and write persuasively! I will help you do this from our first session together.
I teach practical strategies for analysing what you read and evaluating the effects of an author's choices. We will develop these skills through modelling, pattern spotting, structured inference techniques, and detailed language analysis. Just as importantly, I will help you turn your ideas into clear, convincing written analysis.
Strong answers require students to identify key themes and how these shift throughout the text. Students also need to develop thoughtful interpretations of characters and the way authors construct meaning. I will help you feel confident writing about your ideas. My aim is to help you get into the head of each author and think and write about their work like a literary critic.
My help does not end once the tutoring session finishes. Successfully recalling quotes, themes and characters is key to exam success and my shared resources will help you recall and consolidate this key knowledge. This helps build confidence for the exams.
