• 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  As a second-year medical student, my interest in private tutoring began after sitting my Leaving Cert. During that time, I recognized the challenges students face in navigating demanding subjects and exam preparation. I benefited greatly from personalized approaches to learning and realized how impactful tailored teaching can be. This inspired me to step into the role of a tutor, aiming to provide adaptable and individualized support to students who, like me, needed guidance to unlock their potential.
  
  What I found most rewarding about tutoring was the cultivation of meaningful interpersonal relationships with my students. Every student learns differently, and by understanding their unique strengths and struggles, I was able to create a personalized learning environment that fostered growth and confidence. The gratitude I received from students and their families, whether through improved results or newfound confidence, solidified my passion for teaching.
  
  These experiences have been invaluable in shaping my commitment to education. They've not only enhanced my interpersonal and communication skills but also reinforced the importance of empathy and adaptability-qualities I bring to both my tutoring and my medical studies.

• 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  As a second-year medical student who sat the Leaving Cert, I teach a variety of subjects, including biology, chemistry, French, maths, and business. Each subject brings something unique to the table, and I enjoy tailoring my approach to the needs of my students.
  
  Maths and business offer a different kind of challenge and reward. I enjoy helping students build problem-solving skills and logical thinking, whether it's tackling algebra or understanding financial principles. It's satisfying to see their confidence grow as they master these practical skills. French, on the other hand, is a subject I find joy in teaching because it's not just about grammar or vocabulary-it's also about cultural appreciation and communication. I enjoy making the language accessible and fun for students, whether through conversational practice or exploring French culture.
  
  As for topics I like a little less, I wouldn't say there's anything I dislike teaching-every topic has its importance. However, I find that some areas, like rote memorization or overly theoretical material, can be less engaging for students. In those cases, I work to make the content more interactive and relevant, so students can connect with it on a deeper level. My goal is always to create a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel motivated and empowered to succeed.

• 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Yes, I had a few role models who greatly inspired me, but one, in particular, stands out-a maths tutor I had during my Leaving Cert preparation. He was an incredible teacher, not just because of his deep knowledge of the subject, but because of his ability to make complex concepts feel approachable and manageable. His teaching style was patient, engaging, and always tailored to my needs, which helped me develop both confidence and a genuine love for the subject.
  
  After I achieved a H1 in my Leaving Cert maths exam, he was the one who referred me to one of his students, encouraging me to step into the role of a tutor myself. His belief in my abilities made a profound impact on me. It helped me believe in myself and showed me the power of a good mentor in shaping a student's journey. His encouragement and example continue to inspire the way I approach tutoring today-striving to not only teach but also to empower students to see their own potential.

• 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  I believe that being a good tutor requires a combination of empathy, adaptability, and excellent communication skills. One of the most important qualities is the ability to relate to students. Tutors are different from teachers in that they cultivate a more personal relationship with the student, taking the time to truly understand their capabilities, strengths, and challenges. This allows tutors to provide more individualized support, which is key to helping students succeed.
  
  Working with the student at their pace is essential. Each student learns differently, so it's important to adapt your teaching style to meet their needs. When a student expresses frustration or complains about a difficult topic, agreeing with them and acknowledging their feelings can build trust and show them you're on their side. This makes the learning experience less intimidating and more collaborative.
  
  Another quality that makes a good tutor is creating a positive and relaxed learning environment. Humor can play a big role in this-making jokes about the subject, especially when something seems bizarre or overly complex, can help lighten the mood and make challenging topics feel more approachable.
  
  Ultimately, a good tutor is someone who empowers students by boosting their confidence, making the material engaging, and fostering a genuine interest in learning. It's about building a partnership with the student where they feel supported, understood, and encouraged every step of the way.

• 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  One of my fondest memories from my school days was the art of trying to distract the teachers by asking them personal questions. It became a bit of a skill among my classmates and me to ask about their favourite hobbies, travel stories, or even what inspired them to become teachers. Of course, the goal was to delay the lesson just a little, especially when it was a particularly tough or dreaded topic.
  
  What made these moments special was that they often led to a good laugh or an interesting conversation, which helped ease the tension in the classroom. It made the whole experience of learning feel less intimidating because we got to see our teachers as people, not just authority figures at the front of the room. It was a reminder that they, too, had passions, challenges, and a sense of humour.
  
  Looking back, those moments taught me the importance of building connections and creating a relaxed, supportive environment-something I now strive to do as a tutor. Sometimes, a good laugh or a personal story can break down barriers and make even the toughest subjects feel more approachable and enjoyable.

• 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  In maths, one of the biggest challenges was developing confidence in solving complex problems under exam conditions. While I enjoyed the logical nature of the subject, timed exams often left me second-guessing my answers. To overcome this, I practiced relentlessly and focused on understanding the fundamental principles rather than memorizing methods. This approach not only improved my confidence but also helped me achieve a H1 in the Leaving Cert.
  
  Even now, as a medical student, I occasionally face similar challenges-managing large volumes of information, grappling with abstract ideas, or perfecting practical skills. But these experiences have taught me resilience and the importance of finding strategies that work for me, lessons I aim to pass on to my students in their own learning journeys.

• 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  As a medical student, my greatest passion lies in helping people, particularly through the lens of healthcare, but it also extends to the world of academics and teaching. I am deeply passionate about both the science of medicine and the opportunity to make a positive impact on others' lives. The ability to improve someone's well-being, whether through direct patient care or through the broader contributions of research and knowledge sharing, is incredibly fulfilling to me.
  
  When it comes to teaching, I am particularly passionate about the opportunity to make complex subjects more accessible and relatable for students. I love breaking down difficult concepts and helping students discover their strengths and develop their own confidence in their abilities. Being able to empower others through education and to foster that "aha" moment when something clicks is deeply rewarding.
  
  In essence, my passion is about combining my love for academics with my desire to help others. Whether it's guiding a student through a tricky concept or eventually working as a healthcare professional to improve patient outcomes, the drive to help and to teach is at the heart of what motivates me every day.

  What makes me a Superprof is my combination of experience, adaptability, and passion for helping students succeed. Having gone through the challenges of rigorous exams myself, I understand the importance of personalized support and the need for a flexible, student-centered approach. I tailor my teaching to suit each student's unique learning style, pace, and needs, which helps create an environment where they can thrive.
  
  My experience in tutoring a wide range of subjects, from biology and chemistry to French, maths, and business, has allowed me to develop a versatile teaching style that can adapt to different subject areas and students' individual requirements. This experience has also helped me cultivate strong interpersonal relationships with students, enabling me to understand their strengths and challenges, and to offer encouragement and support in a way that builds confidence.
