About Larry Weintraub

I am a pro Sax Player retired from the US Navy Atlantic fleet Band, 2005. I have been teaching at Old Dominion University since 2011. Before that in music stores since 1995. All of my students have received Superiors in Solo & Ensemble Festivals in both MD and VA. I have placed 12+ students either in All-City, All-County and All State Bands in MD & VA. In addition I have prepared 2 Old Dominion University Community Music Division clarinet students for auditions at the Gov. School for the Arts in Norfolk, VA. Both were accepted in the program. I also prepared 2 Tidewater Community College students of mine for auditions at Virginia Commonwealth Universities Jazz Studies Program and Shenandoah University. Furthermore I prepared 1 of my music store students for his audition at the Valley Forge Military Academy Band. He was accepted and received an annual $25K Clarinet Scholarship to play in their band.

My school teaching experience includes:
* ArchBishop Keough High School in Baltimore, MD 1986-1987. Taught band and string ensemble. Job was cut.
* Virginia Beach City Public Schools, 2009-2010. Taught 5th grade strings. Job was cut.
* Old Dominion University Community Music Division, 2011 - present. Teach saxophone and clarinet to high school, middle school, college age and adult students.
* Tidewater Community College, 2012-2015. Taught saxophone and clarinet to music majors until I ran out of students.
*Various Music Stores in Virginia Beach, VA. Taught saxophone and clarinet 1995 - 2010. Stopped teaching at music stores to take the position at Old Dominion University.

I have played and toured in the West African countries of Benin, Gabon and The Congo as a US Navy Show Band member. While in the Navy I also played and toured to Trinidad & Tobago twice. Puerto Rico many times, Ireland and Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the America we played from Key West, FL to New York City and beyond.

While in the Army Band out of Colorado Springs, CO we toured all over Colorado, Wyoming, N & S Dakota, Iowa (for the Glenn Miller Festival) and Minnesota.

I have been a soloist on tenor, bari, alto saxes and clarinet. In the Orlando Navy Band I performed Artie Shaws "Concerto For Clarinet" with the band. I have performed in 14 Military Band Tattoos in the Norfolk, VA area and in Halifax, NS. In 1999 I was selected to be the tenor sax soloist in the Scope International Tattoo in Norfolk, VA.

Other than all the above I run my own Jazz Combo called Swing Time and perform locally. My other performance includes playing in 23 Shows/Musical Productions (Guys & Dolls etc) as a paid orchestra pit member. Played in backup band for Al Martino, Carmella Quinn and The Four Tops as a civilian. Chuck Mangione (3x's), Keely Smith, Lee Greenwood, Marv Stamm (NYC 1st call studio and jazz trumpeter) and Roan Tinan (2x's, member of The Irish Tenors singing group) with the Navy Band in Norfolk, VA.

When I was in between the Army and Navy I played both tenor and bari sax with the Bing Miller Big Band out of Baltimore, MD. Besides playing locally the band toured to Frankfurt, Germany to play a week at the Five Star International Park Hotel.

I left the band and rejoined the military band program once my teaching job was cut. This time I went into the Navy Band Program via an audition at the US Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, MD. I stayed in the Navy Band Program until I was able to retire in January, 2005.

About the lesson

I have my B.S. in Music from Towson University, May 1978. Post Navy I earned my Masters in Music Education from Old Dominion University, August 2014.

How I teach depends on the level of the student. However I have found that most high school, middle school and college age students need the following:

* a firm grasp of the basics to include correct embouchure, correct hand position, tone development, reed choice, mouthpiece & ligature choice. Development of technic, ability to play scales the whole range of the horn.
* musicality or how to phrase, time or playing the note values correctly/rhythm, SIGHT READING, how to play Jazz/Funk rhythms correctly especially when articulations are not placed over the notes.

For students who have been playing a while either a 45 minute or 60 minute lesson is best.
For beginners a 30 minute lesson is best.
