About Joan
With my Ph.D. in Neurobiology, I have worked as a scientist conducting experiments, writing grant proposals, and publishing science papers. While working as a scientist, I started teaching university courses and discovered my true calling. I thoroughly loved teaching! However, I also discovered I lacked the necessary skills and training needed to be extremely effective as a teacher. This led me on a journey of learning and exploration through workshops, courses, and eventually a Master's degree in Adult Education. Eventually, I shifted away from being a scientist to working in faculty development where I assisted other faculty members in learning how to teach effectively. All through this journey, I kept teaching classes and applying what I was learning.
The journey taught me that all students can learn - it's just that not all students learn in the same way or at the same pace.
My favorite part of teaching was holding office hours where I could work one-on-one with students. This gave me the opportunity to get to know each person and their preferred learning style. It was extremely rewarding to me to see them gain confidence, improve their grades, and become excited about science.
As a tutor, I believe I can bring these years of experience, passion, and knowledge to assisting you succeed.

With a Master's degree in Adult Education, lessons with me are well organized, tailored to your needs and ability, highly interactive, and extremely productive.
We start with an assessment of what you want to gain from the lessons, how you like to learn (not all people learn the same way), and what your current skill level is. Together, we then map out a plan of action with learning objectives, small bites of new information, and plenty of time to practice before moving on to another concept.
I take the time to listen to your needs and guide you through the lessons. Not only will you gain knowledge in the subject matter but you will also gain skills in how to approach the material, how to think your way through problems, and how to organize your time.
My goal is to assist you in gaining needed skills in such a way that you feel empowered, confident, and eager to learn more.
