About Anna
I am a British transplant in Sacramento, California, I moved here from Winnie the Pooh's hundred acre wood to be with my Californian husband, a high school teacher over 18 months ago and slowly finding my feet in the new world.
In 2017, I completed a First Class BA Hons in socio-cultural anthropology from the University of Kent, Canterbury, where I also took classes in religion, literature and specialised with a thesis in narratives of forgiveness and reconciliation as responses to violence.
Since graduating, I have taught a semester's worth of anthropology classes to home-educated 12-14 year olds and discovered a passion for teaching. My tutoring leaned heavily on a decade's worth of experience working with and caring for children ranging in ages 0 - 15.
I love adapting my knowledge of social sciences and humanities into fun, engaging and accessible materials for students 11 years and older. I not only lean on my childcare experience to understand different stages of development and knowledge, but also the critical, independent thinking I've honed from working in communications for a variety of different not for profits and social enterprises.
As an alumni of home education myself, I am a keen advocate for educational autonomy and self-directed learning and insist on a free taster lesson with my students to establish their interest and curiosity for the subjects that I offer.

I adapt my methodology to the student that I am teaching and if I am teaching a small group, I work to create an environment that gives each child the opportunity to learn and thrive. It is important to me to incorporate a mix of learning styles such as visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, social, solitary etc.
My classes focus on an individual project that will be completed during an 8 week block. This project enables the student to work through some straightforward anthropological theory and principles. The choice of subjects are broad and open to students after four intro classes to social sciences, where they will learn the basics of qualitative research. The course is designed to encourage critical thinking and independent learning.
