About Valters
I am a scholar of classical Indian languages and literatures. My main research is in the ascetic and yogic traditions of Ancient India. The focus of my doctoral dissertation is on the ascetic teachings found in the Sanskrit epic Mahābhārata. My doctoral thesis as well as other forthcoming publications also explore the relationships between the Mahābhārata and early Buddhist literature from the Pali canon and beyond.

I teach both university students and adult learners, usually meeting 1-2 times a week for 1 hour. For students without prior knowledge of ancient Indian languages, I suggest using "A New Course in Reading Pāli" by James W. Gair and W. S. Karunatillake. To students who already have some knowledge of Sanskrit, Pali will be introduced through its similarities and differences from Sanskrit. I have been giving Sanskrit classes online since 2017 and am starting to teach Pali in 2022 as Pali is becoming increasingly important for my research. I have been a co-convenor of the Pali Reading Group in Oxford since 2021.
