About Colin

Background ========== I started learning violin at the age of seven on the island of Orkney and during my teenage years, played in a regional Youth Orchestra and the National Youth String Orchestra of Scotland. Having reached Grade 8 Distinction with my classical playing at school, the classical background really helps my fiddle playing style, in terms of tone, posture and ability to sometimes play for a few hours at a Celtic music session! I should also mention that, as a teenager, I would enter Scottish fiddle competitions to help hone the art of Scottish fiddle playing. The fiddle competition events would always round off with a big fiddle concert and it was fun to join in the concerts. This now reminds me of the fun which musicians can have joining in with a Celtic music session. Fast forward to the present and today, I teach mainly online and also in person workshops in the UK, US and Australia. I look forward to sharing some of my love of Celtic fiddle playing, its adventures and some of the ways in which it contributes to the music and landscape of modern day life. Colin MacLeod

About the lesson

I teach Celtic Fiddle Play by Ear to students from Beginner to Advanced level and from children to adult. Born in Scotland, there is a Scottish and classical influence in my playing style. More about that later. A creative approach is taken with lessons to make these fun. We usually have a story or two with some history & geography woven into the lesson. The lessons aim to meet the student where they are on their Celtic Fiddle Play by Ear journey.
