The way I engage my students is to see what their interests are regarding the topic and having them trying to find the problem in order to see what steps we can use to counter it , from doing that I then give them a similar problem showing what there stuck on and giving them an outline on how to solve it practicing it until their ready to solve it on their own and after a couple of sessions they have been blossoming.
