About Grant
I’m Grant Simpson, a Mechanical Engineering Student at Purdue University. Since starting chess during Covid in 2020, I’ve played multiple OTB tournaments and thousands of games online, climbing to an OTB rating of 1825 USCF with a peak online rating of 2550, defeating countless titled players and multiple grandmasters.

Chess.com Profile - (concealed information)
I discovered my passion for teaching chess through my high school club, where I analyzed my teammates’ games and explained my thought process to help them improve. Continuing with my Purdue Chess club, I took on a mentoring role in providing my teammates with the knowledge and experience they needed to grow as players. Because I didn't learn from expensive grandmaster coaching, I know exactly how it feels to be stuck at a plateau with no clear guidance or direction. My goal is to give you the knowledge, tools, and insights that I wish I had to explode your rating and help you win games.

For beginner students, we will start with learning the fundamentals of the game. For online students I'll construct lessons through lichess and chess.com, and for in-person students we'll use physical board. I'll design these lessons to help teach you key concepts and get you familiarized with the pieces. For intermediate and advanced students, I'll analyze your online chess profile and important games and learn your strengths and weaknesses. From there, I'll design lessons tailored to help you improve where you need. These lessons may be in learning about tactical patterns, positional concepts, openings, or anything else you want to improve upon.
I believe my strength as a tutor comes from knowing how it feels to be at all levels of the game. I started in 2020 as an absolute beginner, and through trial and error, I climbed the rating ladder and began to beat International Masters and Grandmasters. Therefore, I know exactly what works, what doesn't, and what modern resources are best for developing your game. I also know that at the end of the day, chess is a fun game! Keeping this in mind, I will create lessons that both challenge and entertain you.
