About Rian
I'm a newly certified High School teacher with a Bachelor's degree is in both Biology and Education, with minors in Geology and Evolution. Currently, I am in graduate school studying Ecology and Evolution with a concentration in Genomics. Throughout my college experience I have been a tutor for a variety of subjects such as introductory biology, upper division genetics, and organic chemistry. Genetics is my specialty, with all of my students' grades raising by a full letter-grade or higher after regular attendance with me. After such success, I was requested to help found a new tutoring program at the college. It focused on relaying my studying strategies and habits with students, which have now helped over 100 students succeed in their scientific endeavors.

I believe strongly that every student has the capacity to excel, but often the structure of classes doesn't meet their needs. The best way to learn is to have hands-on experience with the material, but that isn't always possible given its content. The next best thing is active learning through individualized activities that promote critical thinking and problem solving strategies. Through this kind of scaffolded learning, there's no relying on rote memorization. I try to utilize hands-on activities wherever possible so the learning is in the hands of the tutee, rather than through the voice of the tutor. My lesson plans typically include a brief warm up to gauge the student's comfort with the material, which is followed by inquiry-based learning activities guided by the needs of the student. I have experience teaching 7th - 10th graders in biology and earth science, and I have experience tutoring undergraduate-level biology, chemistry, and genetics.
