About Robert

I have tutored high school students privately after school and during the summer. We met in their homes or at the public library. I charged an hourly fee, and I provided any necessary materials.

Having taught in special education in two local schools for many years meant that I had contact with a lot of parents of special needs students. At one point I did have a website, but didn't utilize it much. I stayed very busy, especially in the summers, and always had a full schedule. I typically met with each student's teacher in order to get an idea of what the focus of my instruction/remediation should be. Becoming familiar with the student's learning style(s) was also very helpful. Often parents would share records and test results with me. After each tutoring session, I documented the student’s progress and gave parents written updates, as well as phone calls or emails as needed.

My students and I utilized technology and the internet often during our sessions, I have also tutored online for several tutoring companies, so am familiar with the curriculums or methods used in those settings.

Tutoring one on one and online has been very enjoyable and rewarding. My students and I had fun, and grew quite fond of one another.

About the lesson

My tutoring style is patient, flexible, supportive, and highly communicative. I tend to emphasize principles and concepts over-rules and memorization. I use metaphor, analogy, pictures, and words as much as symbols and equations to both explain material and help solve problems. I try to help students get away from a plug-and-chug mentality; the ability to effectively select and use the right tools for a problem follows from a solid understanding of the concepts involved, and not the other way around.

I work to help students not only learn to do problems, but to understand them, and in doing so, hope to convey some appreciation for their beauty and truth.

I empathize with students who are frustrated with mathematical coursework and concepts and incorporate a supportive manner in my teaching style. This applies especially to students with learning disabilities or otherwise unique learning styles that may be less compatible with a traditional classroom learning environment.
