About Marlis
My name is Marlis and I am 21 years old. I obtained my VWO-final diploma at secondary school in 2019 with the profile Nature & Health. During my six years of pre-university education I myself had trouble with Physics and Chemistry and I took tutoring for that. I know very well how frustrating it is to follow one or more courses, where you cannot achieve good results despite making an effort. Several tutors have helped me and in the end it paid off. Because of this experience I know very well what I liked during tutoring and what didn't work for me. I especially noticed that teachers who only tutored in one way couldn't teach me much. The trick, in my opinion, lies in citing multiple ways of solving a problem. As a student, you can then decide for yourself what works best for you. I am now following a double study, Criminology and Law, at the University of Leiden and I have almost even received my first bachelor's degree. Although you may be under the impression that a profession may just not be for you, I am convinced that this can change. All I ask of you is commitment, perseverance and good preparation. Once you've got all that together, you should be fine! In any case, we will do everything together.

I have been giving tutoring lessons to students since the beginning of 2020 and I am very result-oriented. I try to explain how it works in different ways and by linking the problem to reality. I have often seen that students had little affinity with the teacher at school and could not follow his/her explanation. I therefore put a lot of effort into looking at the problem from multiple angles, because this is where the problem often lies. In addition, some basic knowledge is sometimes missing that is assumed within a subject and is therefore no longer quoted by the teacher. I therefore always test the basic knowledge (addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.) and refine if necessary. I also think it is very important to instill confidence in students. I am very aware of the frustration that 'failure' can bring. That is why I think it is important to make clear that a lot is achievable with effort and that you should not be shocked if you do not immediately achieve satisfactory results, because it takes some time to see results. Finally, I offer the student the space to wrestle with assignments themselves, because this often provides the best brain connections as opposed to helping right away. After all, the aim is for the student to be able to solve problems themselves.
