About Sophia
My name is Sophia Pietan, I am a third year student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying English literature with a minor in teaching english as a second language. I have experience working with both native English speakers and non-native speakers of English, both focusing on developing language skills such as reading and writing. I am planning on going into the field of teaching post-grad because I am fervently excited about the impact of educators in the world.

I have been trained under the Reading Simplified curricula, which outlines various methods in teaching reading that are based around the science of reading, which are proven to be remarkably effective. A typical lesson would include: re-reading for fluency, a phonemic awareness activity requiring students to switch sounds in words to create new ones, sound blending activities that involve writing, speaking, and listening, guided reading with the student, and reading games! Each lesson is focused on a distinct letter sound, which teaches the students all the different ways a sound is spelled, for example the "f" sound, can also be "ph." My goal is to make the learning as student centered as possible, meaning it is not a lecture, and make the lessons fun and engaging. These lessons are aimed at children or adults who are struggling with literacy and need the guidance to improve. I am young, passionate, and detail-oriented, which I believe makes me stand apart as a tutor. I believe everyone has the right to be a great reader wholeheartedly! Additionally, my background in English Literature has given me extensive reading and writing skills that I can pass on to students. I believe my studies can aid me in additionally tutoring elementary through high school aged students in their writing for English or history classes, specifically with developing arguments and editing their work. I have experience with helping those around me write more cohesive essays.
