About Valerie
I’m a freelance bassoonist and arts administrator currently based in Boston. I studied with Valentin Martchev, principle bassoonist of the San Diego Symphony at San Diego State University for my Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance, and with Nancy Goeres, former principle of the Pittsburgh Symphony, at the Boston University for my Master of Music in Bassoon Performance.
Throughout undergrad and graduate school, I exceed music theory courses and often took classes and seminars beyond my level, contributing to a rich and deep understanding of art music - including medieval, baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, and musical theatre styles.
Throughout adolescence I played many different instruments, including clarinet, saxophone, guitar, and ukulele. I’ve kept up clarinet and ukulele best simply because they made the move from CA to MA! I’m happy to discuss tutoring options for saxophone and beginner guitar with the understanding I don’t physically have those instruments on hand.

All musicians, from hobby players to professionals, benefit from a good understanding of music theory. Similarly, appreciators of classical music benefit from theory training as well; an understanding of theoretical devices and how they influence the effect of a work vastly improves the listeners experience by contextualizing musical language - it’s rules, exceptions, and deviations. I love teaching theory because seeing students realize its value and begin to think beyond the notes they have to play is so rewarding. In the same way, history studies help to inform listeners and performs alike, to better understand what to look for and what stands out in the historical canon.
I’m also an experienced and confident beginner piano teacher/tutor! I love working with beginners on piano because it’s so much easier to lay foundational knowledge at a keyboard.
My main focus throughout education was on Bassoon Performance, and it is the instrument I am most advanced on. I can teach beginners to advanced bassoon students, including reed making.
I can also teach beginner to intermediate clarinet, and beginner ukulele!
