About Carmen

Forgetfully misplacing assignment sheets or struggling to remember what homework was assigned that night can be a common assurance for students with ADD. Times when they do remember and can proudly show their teacher they’ve completed their work assigned, sure enough, the next morning they’ll forget to bring it to class. I know because I was that student

Recently, I came across my school reports and with curiosity decided to read back over them. Despite being alone when I did, I felt incredibly embarrassed by the repeated message from my teachers which was, “she struggles to stay on task”, “is easily distracted” and “could be achieving better grades, if she was better focused”. High school reports were only a minor improvement.

It dawned on me! This ‘barrier’ to learning had become internalised, taking the form of low self-esteem, lack of confidence and in part exasperated my already poor concentration. Reiterating that I struggled to focus ended up affecting my level of engagement in learning.

When I decided to go back to university at 24, to study a BA in Business Communication, I’d let go of the comments from my school teachers because my main goal was to “just get through uni, the grades didn’t matter”. I soon realised, I had no idea how to study. So, I dedicated equal time to learning how to study while I was studying. I began researching and looking into different ways of learning, effective note-taking and revising the material.

The methods I adopted were unlike what I’d been taught in school and which were far better suited to learning with ADD. I was studying how to study, while I was already studying. And that’s when everything changed!

Receiving my first-semester transcript with each units final marks, brought the best sense of achievement I had ever received in all my years of schooling.

Learning the skills and techniques of studying that were best suited to me and as someone with ADD, I had brought myself from a C average student at school to a High Distinction average at university. Over time, my beliefs about my learning capabilities shifted and my confidence in engaging in my learning soared.

At the advice of my course coordinator, I graduated with a double degree and have gone on to achieve further success in my professional life.

Today, I gain huge satisfaction in passing on ideas, tools and techniques to those with ADD in an effort to; motivate and empower students to further learning, apply themselves to their studies and challenge their expectations and views of the learning process.

Many students with ADD won't receive as much help from teachers as they may need and often pay the price for their problems in low grades, scolding and punishment, teasing from their peers, and low self-esteem.

How to study can be just as important as the material being learned. I offer help overcoming learning challenges and negative beliefs about learning capabilities while developing effective study skills. Once any student becomes comfortable with the method that works best for them, academic success will follow.
