About Alex

I am a USC psychology student minoring in english. I have a passion for teaching english and history and have several years experience coaching youth athletes both individually and in groups. I also have 2 years experience as a sitter/carer for adolescents with medical conditions (diabetes). In addition, I have worked as an assisting staff member on a year 9 school camp which involved managing large groups (100+) students in situations where they were tired, stressed, hungry etc and generally out of their comfort zone, this role including the management of students with medical conditions (diabetes).

About the lesson

Teaching method
There are a couple of principles that are the foundations on which my approach to teaching is based. The first of these principles is that the student's performance is my responsibility, meaning that if a given student has not understood a particular concept or is making some other kind of error for example, then that is because I have not been communicating in the way that is most effective for that given student.

I find that this approach is useful because it fosters an environment where the students are more likely to voice the fact that they are struggling in a given area. Meaning that whatever the given issue is can be identified and addressed as quickly as possible.

The second principle which guides my approach to teaching can be summed up in one word; why? As a general rule any time I am providing any kind of information, I begin with an explanation as to why the information will benefit the student if they understand it. The reason for this approach is that if the student does not know why they should learn a given piece of information they will more than likely not try and understand it.

Classes
The way a given class or lesson will be structured is informed by a few different factors. The first is why the person (teacher/parent/school administrator etc) has hired me. Is it to improve grades in a given subject, preparation for a difficult assessment task, the development of a particular skill that exists inside a given subject or something else?

Another factor that influences the class structure is the behavior of the student or students. For example a large group of students that are frequently distracted my require more frequent pauses when moving through the lesson content in order ensure that everyone is up to speed and on track to meet the outcomes that the person hiring me has asked to be achieved.

Approach to topic
Again the approach I take to a given topic is dependent on the situation. The factors that influence my approach include but are not limited to: the desired learning outcomes of whoever has hired me, the content of the given subject and the time frame within which the outcomes need to be accomplished inside of.

-First lesson is free
-Rate may have to be increased if the investment of time on my part outside of lesson time to prep for the class is significant. How that actually applies in practice will be dependent on the situation and I am more than happy to discuss the details in person or over the phone, via email etc.

As a general rule the rate is 20/hr and a cancellation fee will apply only if the cancellation occurs within 48hrs of scheduled lesson time. However, I understand that life get's in the way sometimes and I'm more than happy to waive that cancellation fee if something comes up out of the blue, as long as I get a reasonable explanation.
