About Joni
Hi! I’m Joni, a science, psychology and English tutor with a background in research, clinical science and university teaching. Since 2015, I have taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to students from around the world, refining a teaching style that explains complex ideas clearly and adapts to each student’s individual needs.
Today, I combine my teaching experience with my scientific background to help students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills and gain a genuine understanding of the subjects they study.
I hold undergraduate and Honours degrees in Science (Psychophysiology/Psychology) after which I worked as a medical researcher on projects investigating degenerative neurological conditions and also worked in a biofeedback clinic applying neurotherapy for children.
I completed a Master’s degree in Colour Design and Technology and began a PhD researching the neurophysiological correlates of colour perception. During this time I taught university laboratory classes including research methods and ethics, neurotechnology, and sensory neuroscience. Although I chose not to complete the PhD, it provided extensive experience in scientific research, critical thinking, and communicating complex ideas.
Alongside my academic qualifications, I also hold a Certificate III in Marine Engineering (MED 2), providing practical experience with mechanical systems, diagnostics and applied technical problem-solving.
Whether I was teaching at university, working in research, sailing around the world or teaching English, the part I enjoyed most was connecting with students and helping them experience that “aha!” moment when everything finally clicks.

I primarily support students with their current classwork, textbooks and homework, helping them develop a clear understanding of the concepts they are learning in school and to gain confidence.
My lessons are discussion-based and interactive. I break complex ideas into clear, manageable steps and encourage students to ask questions, think critically and work through problems with guidance. I love helping students understand why something works, rather than just memorising. While achieving good grades is important, I believe lasting success comes from developing a genuine understanding of the subject.
My goal is to build confidence, curiosity and independent thinking so that students develop skills that extend well beyond the next test.
