About Fannette
Enhancing my linguistic proficiency facilitated engaging in intercultural communication and exchange, whereas studying Journalism in my bachelor degree and Language & Intercultural Communication in my master degree provided me with numerous opportunities to explore the outside world.
Alongside studying, I broadened my range of expertise by engaging in various teaching positions and providing my fellow students with interpretation and translation services while visiting a number of sites throughout China such as the Yunnan Military Academy and the National Southwestern Associated University.
Luckily, I was finally accepted as a postgraduate student majoring in Msc Language and Intercultural Communication program by the University of Edinburgh this September, and I firmly believe this study experience will prepare me for such an endeavor as this degree provides its students with the expertise necessary for obtaining such positions due to facilitating the mastering of key skills such as teaching, planning, organization and communication.
I was also involved working as a Teaching Assistant in Mali where I taught Chinese as well as phonetics and calligraphy alongside overseeing cultural activities and managing classes. As a result of upholding an interactive and enjoyable intercultural communication style, I was awarded the title of ‘Excellent Intern’ which deepened my determination to obtain an actual intercultural communication-related career, whereas the multicultural nature of this experience strengthened my linguistic proficiency.
Alongside my undergraduate study, I worked as a Teacher of CET-4 (Chinese National College English Test, Level 4) via which I aided various students in passing the exam. During my senior year, I taught spoken English for children and college students which impressed upon me the various difficulties that can be experienced in the process of second-language acquisition.
Upon completion of undergraduate study, I have volunteered as Chinese Teacher at the Confucius Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia for 2 years which enabled me to indulge my passion for intercultural communication and both living and working in a multilingual environment. During this period, I taught students of various levels, which required diversifying my approach and utilizing various communication methods. Through this, I understood the importance of being creative and flexible in the classroom, and by overseeing the institute’s media affair I came to understand the positive nature of using both traditional and digital media. These experiences have been rewarding in a number of ways in addition to gaining skills and wisdom, I have also been able to reflect upon them when writing two separate articles recounting my time in Cambodia, which were published by the World Confucius Institute Headquarters and received over 5000 views when reposted on WeChat within a short period of time.
My linguistic and culture-related aspirations inspire me to work with the Confucius Institute as this will prepare me for becoming a leading individual in the promotion of intercultural communicator throughout the globe.
I also shared my awareness via a personally-created social media channel which hosted articles detailing the unique attributes of various cultures and languages, the engaging content included in resulted in gaining an average of 800 views per post.
I, therefore, greatly look forward to diversifying my understanding and skillset even further in preparation for fulfilling my desired career.

Perfect! I've attempted to try and learn Chinese several times in the past but always struggled getting any of the basics right. However, with Fannette's tutoring, I feel I've learnt more this past month than I have in the months of time and effort I poured in in the past. Fannette's knowledge in all things China is incredible, from history and culture to differences in Chinese provinces!
