About Baturay
My name is Baturay, and I am a fourth-year music student at Istanbul Bilgi University, where I was awarded a full scholarship based on my entrance examination. I offer private lessons in music theory, harmony, ear training, counterpoint, and composition. I studied ear training and harmony for three years with Berklee College of Music graduate Güç Başar Gülle, and composition for three years with Oğuz Usman, a graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW). We will use the 'industry standard' music theory textbook excerpts alongside with my own methods which I gathered from my professors.
I will make sure you will progressively learn each step of the 'curriculum' with exercises and their assignments.
You will learn how to construct major and minor scales (along with the modes) in any key, then build chords from them, from basic triads to seventh chords. Once these fundamentals are in place, we will explore how chords function within progressions and how they shape the overall structure of a piece. We will analyze works by composers such as W. A. Mozart and J. S. Bach, focusing on harmony, voice leading, and form, and then apply the same principles in your own compositions.
If you are interested, I can also teach counterpoint which is one of the foundations of composition. We will begin by writing for two independent voices (Species Counterpoint) and gradually work toward composing a two-part invention.
