I’m a Senior Instructional Systems Designer and learning strategist with an Ed.D. from Columbia University and 20+ years of experience designing digital, immersive, and performance‑based learning experiences for federal agencies, intelligence community partners, and education organizations. I help adult learners, educators, and advanced students build practical AI and tech skills they can use immediately in their work and studies.
My background includes leading large‑scale curriculum design initiatives, building e‑learning modules, and modernizing technical tradecraft using tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Captivate, and multimedia production platforms. I also hold an Associate Certificate in AI for Learning and specialize in responsible, human‑centered integration of generative AI into instructional workflows.
What I tutor
AI literacy for professionals and educators (foundations, terminology, capabilities, and limits)
Using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Canva, Firefly, Synthesia, etc.) for lesson design, content creation, and workflow optimization
Instructional design & curriculum development (ADDIE, Bloom’s Taxonomy, scenario‑based learning, problem‑based learning)
Digital learning and e‑learning design (storyboarding, rapid authoring tools, multimedia assets, accessibility and Section 508/WCAG considerations)
Tech‑adjacent skills: digital literacy, basic programming logic, data‑driven storytelling, and presentation of complex technical topics to non‑experts
Sessions can focus on building your skills (hands‑on practice with tools), designing materials (we co‑create lessons, modules, or job aids), or solving a live problem (e.g., planning a new course, modernizing a training program, or integrating AI into existing workflows).
How I teach
My approach is grounded in adult learning theory and decades of experience working with busy professionals:
We start with your goals and context (role, learners, constraints), then design a short learning path together.
I use scenario‑based practice, realistic examples from your domain, and step‑by‑step workflows rather than abstract lectures.
You leave each session with concrete artifacts: templates, prompts, design outlines, or scripts you can reuse and adapt.
I’ve designed immersive simulations, virtual world experiences, and technical training programs under major grants and federal contracts, and I routinely translate emerging technologies into practical learning experiences for non‑technical audiences. If you want to become confident using AI and digital tools in your teaching, training, or professional practice, I’d be glad to help.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Laila is extremely knowledgeable and caring. I met her in a professional capacity at an academic camp where she worked as a group leader. We kept in touch over the years and when I ran into some professional challenges, I noted her work in simulated experiences. After explaining some mommy professional challenges, she inspired me to explore technical areas where her published work helped highlight problem solving techniques that I had not considered. I wanted to understand how my decision making was being negatively impacted when I was presented with challenges at work. Laila helped me work through situations where she provided an environment where I could get immediate feedback through simulations, and now I am much better at handling these challenges.
