About Willie
I speak three languages: Shanghainese, Mandarin, Cantonese,
so I know what it's like to live between languages. For linguistics itself, I studied it under guidance from a
mentor well-known in Chinese linguistics, so the depth isn't random.
I can pitch this two ways.
If you want the practical version: I'll teach you the idioms,
the slang, the rhythm native speakers actually use.
If you prefer the academic version: I'll show you the syntax differences — how Chinese builds meaning through tone and context, how English does it through word order and inflection,
and why certain translations feel awkward.
Either way, the same goal: fluent in real conversation.
— THE PAIN I SOLVED
I spent years memorizing vocabulary and drilling grammar. Then
I stepped into real conversations and felt completely lost — native speakers fire off idioms and slang, never slowing down. As much as I know all of the vocabularies, I was still lost.
That's why I teach the way I do now.

Language and culture are inseparable. You can't really learn a language without knowing the culture that gives it meaning — why a phrase lands, why a sentence feels rude, why a joke
misses its mark. Words are only the surface.
WHAT MAKES MY CLASSES DIFFERENT — REAL TALK
Every English speaker has phrases they fire off automatically —
"I'm down," "hit me up," "let's table this," "that's a stretch."
That English logic often doesn't transfer when translated into
Chinese. Word-for-word Chinese sounds robotic, and worse, misses
the cultural cues native speakers actually use.
Chinese has its own set of high-frequency everyday expressions
with a similar conversational logic — but you won't find them by
translating. They live in a different language family with a
different rhythm, different collocations, different pragmatic
cues.
This is the part most Chinese classes skip. I teach the phrases
native Chinese speakers actually fire off in real situations.
