About Christian

Hello! My name is Christian, and I am entering my second year of the Honours Neuroscience program at the University of Alberta in the fall of 2019. I am a passionate and enthusiastic student who places a great emphasis on the foundations for success and uses this to get the most out of myself. Throughout high school, I achieved 95% or better in every course that I took, including the 10, 20 and 30 levels of English, Social and Math, and the 20 and 30 levels of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I believe that this level of success is attainable for anyone with the right attitude and tools, and I would love to show you how. My interests include playing badminton, tennis and ping pong, and hanging out with the six cats and two dogs at my house.
I have been tutoring since 2015, which has seen me teach English, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Social Studies and French to peers in high school. I have also helped my younger siblings with schoolwork for years. If chosen, I would love to share the study methods, time allocation and keys for success that have allowed me to obtain my marks. As a student, I have found both academic success and personal fulfillment in my studies and seek to translate these as a tutor.

I am a personable and friendly tutor who gets to know students and lays an attainable plan for success based on their goals. I emphasize a deeper understanding of material, specific practise in areas of difficulty with feedback for improvement, and lastly, a comprehensive look at the course to ensure confidence on tests. Having received 100% on the written components of the English 30 and Social Studies 30 diplomas, and a 5 on the Advanced Placement English exam, I am also very comfortable teaching improved writing skills. Whether you are in elementary, junior high, or high school, I would love to tutor you by planning and executing meaningful lesson plans that both suit your needs, and allow you to discover the version of success that you envision for yourself.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

In junior high, I began to take my education very seriously and sought to obtain the best grades possible. In high school, I was fortunate to continue this success, but as I progressed through the years, I additionally developed a love of learning for learning's sake. Now in my undergraduate, on top of extracurricular activities and campus events, I try to balance academic success with personal research and exploration into topics that resonate with me. Tutoring is one of the best ways for me to do this, as I find that when I teach others topics such as Math, Chemistry or English, it requires that I deeply understand the topic, and when tutees ask questions of me, it helps both of us strengthen and reaffirm what we know.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I teach all subjects in high school, and I am passionate about these subjects because the sciences and the humanities that an Alberta education provides are in many ways the foundation for future success in an undergraduate degree, and in lifelong learning. As someone who places a deep emphasis on the foundations for success in all aspects of life, helping students master high school subjects is deeply rewarding as I am helping them establish these roots in academia, and I also can revisit these great subjects.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I love tutoring because I see it as much more than one student helping another understand a subject; I believe that tutoring, like many things in life, is all about relationships, and I do my best to forge a strong one with each of my clients. I think this makes lessons more enjoyable for the tutees, and when I can transform challenging concepts into an open and personable conversation, I see this as a powerful way to express the material. One of my attributes that might make me a "Superprof" is my mindset: I think of tutoring, in some ways, as a chance for both the client and myself to grow in our understanding of the topic together, with me simply facilitating the discussion, clarifying points of confusion, and guiding the lesson with concepts to learn and questions to attempt.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have many role models, but in the field of academia, my high school Biology and Chemistry teacher was particularly influential. She was a very intelligent and respected faculty member at my school, but additionally, she consistently delivered excellent lessons that made topics easy to understand, the learning process enjoyable, and inspired students to do our own research into the topic outside of class time. She helped develop my love of learning in many ways, and I seek to emulate her clear explanations and enthusiastic approach as a tutor.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success are my personal tendency to learn concepts and subjects from the ground up to ensure a deeper comprehension, my personability with clients, my constant effort to be able to explain material in the simplest terms possible, and my recent, but important, emphasis on personal growth and development as I strive to be ready for whatever career I may take on in life.
