About Andrew

I love teaching because it allows me to share my passion for the accordion and help others unlock new possibilities in their playing. There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching a student make a breakthrough, whether it’s mastering a new tune, developing their technique, or finding their own musical voice. While I spend much of my time touring and performing at concerts and festivals, teaching offers a meaningful counterbalance. It keeps me grounded, focused, and constantly thinking about music from new perspectives. I enjoy the connection it brings — being part of someone’s musical journey, seeing their progress, and helping them grow in confidence. Whether a student is a total beginner or an advanced player, I find it genuinely fulfilling to help them take the next step. Teaching isn’t just a side part of my career — it’s something I truly care about and always make time for.

About the lesson

While I specialise in Irish and Scottish traditional music, I also have experience in Musette and Jazz, and teach techniques that are valuable across many accordion styles. Whether you’re looking to build repertoire, explore new genres, or develop your technical and stylistic playing, I can adapt lessons to suit your goals. I usually teach by ear, helping students develop strong listening skills and musical intuition. Each lesson also comes with supporting materials — including video demonstrations and sheet music — tailored to the material we cover. I’ve been teaching regularly for over 10 years and currently hold teaching positions at three of the UK’s leading folk music institutions: the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Newcastle University, and the University of the Highlands and Islands. One of my students began as a complete beginner and is now playing at a near-virtuosic level — I truly enjoy helping players grow and realise their potential. Lesson length: 1 hour Rate: £50 per hour
