About Liam

Howdy! My name is Liam and I have been playing trombone since 2012 and marching it since 2017, and it is one of the great joys of my life. As low brass captain of my high school marching band, part of my job was helping very young students first starting out on the trombone, as well as helping students who were new to marching.

Although I expect a lot of students will be brand new to trombone with no investment in marching band, the reason I include that I teach marching as well is because of how many doors learning to march can open. In high school and college, marching band is one of the rare classes that counts as both a performing art and a sport, a feature that often allows many students to bypass certain physical education or art requirements to graduate. It teaches discipline, memorization, and teamwork, and almost always makes you a better player on your instrument. In addition to all of this, marching band is just extremely fun and a great opportunity to make a lot of friends. All of this is to say that marching techniques may not be something every student wants to learn, but if it’s something you’re even remotely interested in, I am more than willing to teach you in addition to our regular trombone lessons.

I am a young teacher and remember what it was like when I was starting out on trombone about eleven years ago, which helps me connect and empathize with younger kids who might be in the same position. I believe that any student is capable of excelling at the trombone and marching trombone, and my teaching style is very much rooted in this belief. I am ecstatic to begin working with you and seeing just how far we can go together!

About the lesson

My teaching expertise is geared towards younger students starting out on the trombone, especially students looking to begin playing trombone in a marching band. As a trombonist with both years of high school and collegiate marching band experience, my lessons are unique in that I can teach you both how to play the trombone, as well as proper marching techniques while playing the trombone.

I can and will meet you exactly where you’re at. For absolute beginners, our first lessons might include how to hold the trombone, the different parts of a trombone, and getting a sound out of your trombone, whereas for more advanced beginners this could be increasing note range, learning to play a song, working on embouchure, etc. For those interested in learning marching techniques as well, our first lessons may be more aimed at basic marching in place, or playing and standing at the same time. If you have any specific requests for what you would like to learn, I would be more than happy to meet you there too.

After I gauge where we should start, we will begin breaking new ground. I might explain a concept to you, followed by a demonstration or an exercise that we go through together. After lessons I might ask you to do some work until the next time we meet, as it is crucial that you practice what you learn on your own time. I am less interested in the amount of work you do and more what you learned from it, so we can work on that the next time we meet.

It is important to remember that good communication is the key to good learning. If something isn’t working for you, if something is still confusing to you, or whatever it may be, I have definitely been there. Your feelings and what you have to say is of the utmost importance, so please tell me.
