I start every lesson with a student-centered inquiry-based approach, called VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) which I developed as an educator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. It is a tool for visual literacy that even math and history teachers could use for word problems or political cartoons.
In this portion, we dissect an image, paragraph, stanza, or artwork to form observations, conclusions, or even more questions. This also gives me insight into how to best tailor lessons for each scholar.
My goal is to get my scholars curious enough to start asking the right questions.
Depending on our goals, the rest of the lesson may be comprised of vocabulary, guided and independent writing practice, and application.
I often integrate my scholars' personal interests into my topics to keep things exciting, as well.
Any student from elementary through high school is within my wheelhouse!
