About Isobel

Hi! My name is Isobel and I am an undergraduate Medicine student and part-time tutor based in York. I have always had an interest in the sciences and maths, but it wasn't always an easy ride for me! When studying for my Biology and Chemistry A-Levels, I quickly realised that a very different approach to learning was needed if I wanted to reach the top grades. Because of this, I spent extensive time researching into different learning strategies in order to help me study and remember information - it certainly paid off when I was offered a place at Medical school the following September!

My own learning journey has inspired me to share my learning strategies and academic knowledge with others as a tutor, something which I have been working as for the past three years. Over this time, I have refined my teaching skills in order to adapt to the student at hand - no two lessons are the same, and I appreciate that learning styles, interests and goals will differ between students. I take time to consider what your goals are and put in the effort to ensure that they are met - no matter your level. I teach a variety of age groups and levels (up to GCSE maths and science) so whether you are just starting out or ready to finish school, I can help you to pass those exams and get where you need to be.

About the lesson

I have worked as a professional online tutor for around three years alongside studying for a degree in Medicine, and spent time working as a voluntary tutor prior to that. During this time, I have had plenty of time and opportunity to refine my tutoring skills to a T!

Currently, I tutor for the following:
- Maths: Primary, KS3, GCSE
- Science: Primary, KS3
- GCSE Combined Science
- GCSE Chemistry
- GCSE Biology

Typically, I like to spend my first lesson with a student getting to know them - their likes and dislikes, their areas of weakness, and what their goals are within their subject. This usually gives me a good idea of how to structure upcoming lessons. Active recall is something which carries great weight in my lessons due to the extensive research showing it is the best way to learn long-term. As such, my lessons always begin with a short starter activity based on information taught in previous lessons - this way, the student is less likely to forget concepts. I will then move on to teaching the topic at hand, using a mixture of verbal descriptions, demonstrations on the screen and questions for the student. The student will then be asked to complete some simple questions created by myself, before attempting some exam questions.

Overall, this lesson plan takes one hour. This approach has proven to lead to great exam results in the past and students have reported to find this enjoyable and beneficial. However, I must note that this is only a template - I adjust each lesson slightly to fit the student at hand, so don't be put off if this isn't for you! Really good lesson today despite some technical difficulties. Jack showed great effort and managed to maintain much of the information taught when he recalled it spoken-word questions and answers. Looking forward to solidifying this in future lessons
