About Henry
I am a French student at the University of Oxford with a strong academic background in the subject, having achieved an A* at A level and a grade 9 at GCSE, as well as strong results in the DELF exams.
When I first started studying French in year 9, I had a complete block with the language and begged my school to let me drop it. But since I was forced to take a language (like many students across the country) I resolved to at least try and enjoy it, even if I thought I wasn't going perform very well in my exams. Through my own study, I fostered a genuine interest in the subject, and it ended up becoming the subject I performed the best in- securing full marks in 2/3 A level papers- and what I would choose to study at university. Because of this experience, I understand how frustrating language-learning can feel when grammar, speaking or essay-writing do not immediately click. I enjoy helping students move past that stage and realise that French can become much more manageable, and even enjoyable, with the right explanations, practice and exam technique.
I also have professional tutoring experience, having worked with students across different ages and abilities in both in-person and online settings. This has taught me how important it is to adapt lessons to each student’s confidence, goals and learning style. I want my lessons to be supportive, structured and practical, helping students not only improve their marks but also feel more confident using the language.

A typical lesson lasts one hour. I start by chatting to the student to understand how they best learn to ascertain which techniques will keep them engaged with the lesson and will facilitate a productive session- an often neglected step which my previous tutoring experience has taught me to value. Then, I will usually begin by identifying the student’s main difficulty or target area, then move into focused practice, clear explanation and exam-style application.
For speaking lessons, this might involve pronunciation, spontaneous conversation, IRP preparation, topic questions and strategies for developing more sophisticated answers. For writing and literature lessons, I focus on explaining key complex structures and vocabulary which can be applied to achieve top marks in writing exams (and, for A level students, how to craft essay structures and arguments in fluent, high-level French).
At A level, I was successful in securing full marks in both the speaking and writing/literature components. The aim of my lessons is to foster a genuine passion for the subject for pupils who feel a little disillusioned and stuck with the language as I did- or at the very least, to ensure they are able to perform to the very best of their abilities. As such, I am willing to share some of my own resources/notes which helped me achieve these grades. I also have professional tutoring experience, having worked with students across different ages and abilities, including in both in-person and online settings.
My lessons are aimed at GCSE and A-level French students who want to improve their confidence, accuracy and exam performance. I can support students with grammar, translation, speaking, writing (including essays for A level students), and general exam technique (which can be particularly tricky for this subject.)
I have also achieved high marks of 80+ in both the DELF B1 and DELF B2 exams, which I sat before taking GCSE French. I am therefore also happy to provide support for students preparing for DELF qualifications.

Henry has been an incredible French tutor to me. He’s made it incredibly easy to develop my French conversational skills in a really relaxed and fun way. I am now much more confident using my French when visiting France. I don’t hesitate to recommend Henry.
Henry is an incredibly trustworthy and honest tutor, every time I have asked him to help my children out in French he has been a massive help.
Henry is a brilliant French teacher. I really grew in confidence after my lessons with him. I really struggled with my French grammar, but he was incredibly helpful, and I would recommend him to anyone looking to improve their French. He's a wonderful teacher and a fun person.
Henry was my personal tutor for my French Prelims exams at Oxford. I appreciated how he was capable of summarising various texts ranging from medieval French poetry to modern theory, to help me understand the nuance of the French language in relation to literature. In addition, he helped me think more creatively when translating which improved my natural flow of language. His time management skills and flexibility also immensely helped me feel comfortable when learning as he welcomed my busy schedule to find the right time for his tutoring. I hope Henry is aware of how thankful I am for his academic help during such a stressful time :)
Henry helped my child go from a grade 6 to a grade 9 in GCSE French! I could see that he is a hugely passionate tutor and employed tailored tutoring methods that worked best for my child. Highly recommend!
Henry and I met at uni and he helped me practice French throughout the year. He speaks better French than I do even though I lived in France for a while, and while we were practicing he was to explain terms I didn’t recognize in context without breaking into English. He’s so passionate about learning French and has a really keen eye for nuances in French that a lot of tutors lack. He also knows so much about French literature, he was constantly bringing up cool insights on niche works during our conversations. I would definitely recommend him for anyone looking to practice French or prepare for French exams!
I have known Henry as a classmate at Oxford, and he is one of the most perceptive and engaging individuals to learn alongside. His teaching is distinguished by the clarity with which he explains complex ideas, presenting them in a way that is both accessible and intellectually rigorous. What I particularly appreciate is his ability to adapt his approach to the needs of the student, ensuring that concepts are fully understood while also fostering confidence. Through shared academic discussions and collaborative work, Henry consistently demonstrates curiosity, precision, and enthusiasm. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a tutor who is not only knowledgeable, but genuinely committed to supporting their progress.
Henry is one of the most kind hearted and hard working people I know. He is incredibly talented at French and really helped me take my French to the next level. He always delivers the best for his pupils and really has them in mind. You will not regret taking a chance on Henry!
Henry has been my peer for a year and has exhibited incredible drive. He has engaged in student politics to better welfare and to encourage productive learning. Together, we have also led initiatives that improved integration between students and staff and will continue to do so in our following years. Overall, Henry was a rock for our cohort. He has also personally supported me with my French, and I am able to have very confident conversations as he creates a space to not only learn but to comfortably apply the knowledge.
