About Madeleine
I'm a PhD candidate in History at the University of Cambridge, with nearly a decade of experience helping students master the art of academic writing. My background combines rigorous research with extensive one-to-one tutoring, and I specialise in guiding students through the essay-writing process—from planning and structure to argumentation and style. I’ve worked with students from GCSE and A-Level up to postgraduate level, across a range of essay-based subjects including History, English, Politics, and Philosophy. I also support university applicants with personal statements and written work. My approach is thoughtful, practical, and tailored to each individual. Whether you’re struggling to start an essay or aiming to refine a draft, I focus on building the skills and confidence you need to write clearly, think critically, and succeed academically.

As a current PhD student in History at the University of Cambridge with almost a decade of tutoring experience, I specialise in helping students develop clear, structured, and persuasive academic writing. Whether you're preparing for school exams, university assessments, or simply looking to improve your confidence in essay-based subjects, my approach is designed to equip you with the skills to express complex ideas with clarity and precision. My teaching is student-focused, flexible, and grounded in the demands of academic writing at the highest level. I break down the essay-writing process into manageable, practical steps: understanding the question, planning an argument, structuring paragraphs effectively, and using evidence persuasively. In lessons, I work closely with students to diagnose specific challenges—whether that's planning under time pressure, integrating secondary sources, or refining writing style—and build strategies tailored to their individual needs. I also provide detailed, constructive feedback on written work, helping students to develop both technical accuracy and critical depth in their writing. Importantly, my methodology encourages students to think independently and write with purpose—skills that are essential across all humanities and social science subjects. Most of my essay-writing lessons are 60 minutes long, providing enough time to work through planning, writing, and reviewing without overwhelming the student. For those preparing longer pieces—such as coursework, EPQs, or university essays—I also offer 90-minute sessions by arrangement. I hold a First-Class undergraduate degree and a Distinction at Master’s level, both in History, and am now completing my PhD at Cambridge, where I’ve also supervised undergraduate students and marked academic work. Over the past ten years, I’ve tutored students at GCSE, A-Level, IB, and undergraduate level, both privately and through structured university access programmes. I work with students aged 15 and up, including: - GCSE and A-Level students (History, English, Politics, RS, and other essay-based subjects) - IB and EPQ candidates - University applicants preparing personal statements or writing samples - Undergraduate students seeking to improve essay structure, clarity, and argumentation, or requiring assistance with any and all stages of the dissertation writing process - Postgraduate applicants and students, requiring assistance with submitting written work, drafting project proposals and ultimately crafting their thesis Whether you're aiming to boost exam performance, improve coursework, or simply write more confidently, I tailor each lesson to meet you where you are and help you reach your academic goals.

Madeleine has been a godsend. She tutored me for A-Level History, and inspired me to pursue the subject at degree level. She helped me at every stage of the Oxford admission process, including brainstorming ideas for the personal statement, choosing which written work to submit and then preparing for the interview. I truly believe that I received an offer solely because of her constant encouragement and help. After I received the offer, she helped me prepare for Oxbridge level History by giving me sessions on historiographical debates and teaching me how to write a Uni level essay. She is always so encouraging and supportive, and made sure I was confident discussing high-level topics.
Madeleine helped prepare my son for his English and History GCSEs. She is a consummate professional, and I can highly recommend her services. She makes difficult content engaging and digestible. She truly cares about her students and is willing to go above and beyond to meet their individual requirements.
I can't recommend working with Madeleine highly enough; I approached her in my capacity as an opera producer for some coaching to be able to inform my production historically, and also for articles I had to write about the historical performance style. She is a fountain of information and gave me so much useful help and support through the process. She has brilliant energy and is genuinely passionate about using her knowledge to help other people! I'll be going back to her for future help and also for tuition for my daughter when the time comes.
