About James
In 2016, I got my start volunteering as a piano teacher for underprivileged schoolchildren; since then, I've developed my teaching skills with a student first approach, keeping lessons and material fun, interesting, and engaging; and adapting to their specific skills and habits to get the most out of their potential. I believe improving your ear and theory knowledge will help your piano playing immensely, so I do it in a way that's fun and interesting. With more advanced students I push them to re-evaluate their habits, sharpen the definition of their goals, and consider new techniques. I'm currently studying Classical Piano at Concordia University in Montreal. And love how my students influence my work. I love classical, especially Bach and Haydn, right now I'm playing a lot of Messiaen; and jazz, lots of Sarah Vaughan and Grant Green. When I'm playing for my friends, I more often play Billy Joel, the Beatles (and JPEG). Ever since I started teaching, I've continued to believe in the importance of making musical expression available to all. starting from any level, we’ll develop a relationship that improves your musicality, nurtures art, and encourages exploration.

My lessons are tailored to your musical tastes. We'll take music you know and love, and try to understand them better. In the process, the skills and knowledge you learn will improve your musicianship, ear, and mind. Typical lessons include custom worksheets, chord charts, and sheet music for your daily practice. We’ll work on what’s challenging you, and build good habits and technique that make playing and memorizing intuitive. Lessons can be conducted virtually, or in person.
