About Tom
After completing my Bachelor of Environmental Science with a double major in Geology + Ecology and Conservation Biology at Monash University in Melbourne, I worked as a junior geologist on an zinc exploration project in the Northern Territory. Working in the field with experienced scientists inspired me to return to university and complete an Honours year to I can further my knowledge in geology and give myself an opportunity to complete a PhD in the future.
I am passionate about science and although I am completing my Honours in Geology, I still love furthering my knowledge in environmental science and areas of biology as these are fields I love and feel are extremely important.
The more I have studied science, the more I have loved it and found myself wanting to pass on what I have learned and help up and coming scientists understand what they are learning so they are comfortable continuing on to further study and one day possibly entering industry or academia.
I have a large extended family, with many cousins younger than me who I have tutored at various stages throughout their high school educations, as well as a younger sister completing her Bachelor in Arts/Science at Monash who I have tutored extensively throughout high school and university with great success, with her attaining an ATAR of 92. I also informally, very casually tutored my cousin with learning difficulties and mild dyslexia during her year 12 studies.

I have a fairly abstract way of thinking about problems, I find mental visualization aided with diagrams a very effective way to wrap my head around something I am struggling to grasp, and this is the way I find myself teaching. I like to break problems down into steps or sections, each of which is in itself simple and easy to understand, then try and visualize and understand each step/section before combining them, visualizing or thinking about the whole and reassessing where my focus still needs to be. I find this an effective way of honing in on the areas within problems that are causing trouble.
