About Theophilus

I hold a degree in Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering from Federal University of Technology Owerri, and I have extensive experience teaching a wide range of subjects, including A-level Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. My teaching philosophy is centred around making learning engaging and accessible. I believe that with the right approach, anyone can master these subjects. Hello! My name is Theophilus, and I am a dedicated and experienced tutor specialising in mathematics and science. With over 3 years of teaching experience, I have had the pleasure of helping students from various backgrounds achieve their academic goals. My approach to tutoring is student-centred, focusing on understanding each student's unique learning style and needs. I believe in making complex concepts accessible and engaging by using real-world examples and interactive teaching methods. Whether it's algebra, calculus, physics, or chemistry, I strive to make learning enjoyable and meaningful. I have extensive experience teaching A-level courses, including Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. My goal is to help students excel in their A-level exams by providing thorough explanations, practice problems, and exam strategies. I am passionate about fostering a positive learning environment where students feel confident to ask questions and explore new ideas. My goal is not only to improve grades but also to inspire a love for learning and critical thinking. I am committed to helping my students build a strong foundation in maths and science, empowering them to succeed in their academic and professional endeavours. In addition to my teaching experience, I hold a degree in Agricultural and Bio-Resources from Federal University of Technology Owerri, and I continuously update my knowledge to stay current with the latest educational practices and technologies. When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I developed an interest in private tutoring since when I left secondary school in 2017
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. I discuss topics my students have problems with and other related topics in the subject.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My role model is a teacher who taught me in secondary school. She really inspired me to be a teacher and a tutor.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
A good tutor maintains a professional demeanor, respects boundaries, communicates effectively, and is a good listener, patient and creative.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
In high school, I struggled with understanding electromagnetism until my Physics teacher showed us a simple homemade electromagnet. Seeing it in action sparked my curiosity. I went home, made my own, and experimented with different materials. This hands-on experience made the concept clear and ignited my love for learning. As a tutor, I encourage my students to explore and experiment, believing that curiosity leads to deeper understanding and a lifelong passion for learning.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
One of the biggest challenges I faced in my studies was grasping complex concepts in Chemistry, like quantum mechanics. The abstract nature of the topic made it difficult to visualize and understand.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I have a passion for music. I love singing and playing the piano. I also share a passion in languages. I am currently learning and have a proficiency in French and Spanish. I also have a passion for teaching. There is a joy that comes when I teach a student and he/she understands what I'm teaching. It has been life changing.
