About David

Hi, I'm David — an oboist and teacher based in the Chicago area. I hold a Master of Music in Oboe Performance from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Music from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, and I've been a student of music for over 20 years.

I've performed as principal oboe with university symphony orchestras and wind ensembles, played with regional orchestras including the Kishwaukee Symphony, and performed concertos by Mozart and Goossens. I've been teaching privately since 2020, working with students of all ages and levels, and I've also served as a judge for solo and ensemble festivals in New York State.

Teaching is genuinely my favorite part of being a musician. I believe lessons should be something you look forward to, not a chore — and my students' growth, confidence, and love of playing are what I'm proudest of. When I'm not playing or teaching, you'll find me running, practicing yoga, and exploring Chicago's music scene.

About the lesson

My lessons are student-centered, upbeat, and built around one simple idea: you should actually look forward to playing each week! I create a fun, encouraging environment where progress feels natural, whether you're picking up the oboe for the very first time or supplementing your school band or orchestra experience.

A typical lesson starts with the fundamentals that make everything else possible — long tones, scales, and arpeggios — then moves into repertoire shaped around your musical interests. That might be a solo or sonata you love, an etude that targets a specific skill, or a lesson book that fits your level. I'll meet you where you are and build a plan around your goals.

I hold a Master of Music in Oboe Performance and have been teaching privately for over six years, working with students from true beginners to advanced players preparing solos and auditions. I also teach English horn, with special attention to the adjustments that make switching from oboe feel natural.

Lessons are open to all ages and levels: beginners, middle and high school band and orchestra students, adult learners returning to the instrument, and oboists adding English horn for the first time.
