About Chris

I have extensive teaching experience as a University Head of Area, where I taught across undergraduate and postgraduate art and design. The scope of my professional practice encompasses textiles, healthcare space design, interior styling, large-scale displays, and exhibition curation, this is underpinned by a deep, researched understanding of Western art, costume history, and interior decoration, all of which inform my commitment to championing creativity as a vital force for the individual and within society. This approach has been honed over many years of challenging boundaries in my own creative practice, from textiles to fine art, and scenography to interior design. From this experience I have developed an approach to teaching which is centred on a student’s unique ideas and perspectives.

I enjoy teaching all aspects of art and design practice, my tutoring is based on the ethos of developing a student’s imagination and curiosity, a strategy that I have successfully used when teaching undergraduate and postgraduate university studies. This approach allows me to draw out each person's latent strengths through conversations, inspiring authentic creative development. My passion lies in fostering a three-dimensional approach to creative growth by building bridges and responses rather than just assigning tasks. I always aim to encourage students to cultivate a unique artistic vision and personal aesthetic, building on their individual interests. I encourage openness to new ideas and perspectives, while developing fundamental skills in drawing, painting, design, and creating forms. This process helps students forge new connections and a personal alchemy, enabling them to formulate dynamic ways of seeing themselves and the world around them. By fostering meaningful engagement within their creative practice, students are able to link ideas, inspiration and cognitive engagement to create informed outcomes. I believe that good art and design, whilst cultivating critical thinking, empowers a student to become fully engaged in their chosen creative process. This cultivates a profound understanding of aesthetics, encourages experimental investigation, and helps instil an ability to transform ideas into impactful work. Creative development is more than just instruction and information; it is the ignition of a student’s aesthetic force. A spark that awakens dormant creativity and allows the imagination to blossom into new and exciting forms. Through my teaching I encourage experimentation and risk-taking as an important aspect of creativity without fear of failure, to consider how someone can express the inexpressible, to challenge conventions, and to see the world around them not just as it is, but as it could be. To cultivate and dissect a relentless curiosity, an eye for detail, an ability to see the whole landscape of possibilities and an appreciation for beauty. To support a student to understand form, scale, light, colour and allow them to develop aspects of critical thinking and problem-solving that extends beyond their studio practice into the development of a full personal visual language.
