About Jacqueline
I am a violin tutor with 5 years of experience and a Bachelor of Arts in World Music alongside a postgraduate diploma in Ethnomusicology. I have taught over 165 students and I have a performing background that spans Klezmer, Irish fiddle, and gypsy jazz, having played with ensembles in all three traditions at professional level. My ethnomusicology training means I approach each musical tradition with scholarly as well as musical respect, and students who study with me gain an understanding of the cultural significance of the music they are playing. I run an occasional multi-tradition string music event in my local area that brings together players from different folk and world music backgrounds.

My violin teaching spans the world music traditions where the violin is used, from Klezmer to Cajun to Balkan folk to gypsy jazz, and I offer students a journey through the instrument's global biography that classical training alone never provides. I begin world music violin with the concept of idiomatic technique — that each tradition has its own relationship to the bow, the body, and the violin's physical properties, and that mastery of a tradition requires learning to inhabit its technical idiom rather than imposing classical conventions. Klezmer violin is introduced through its characteristic ornaments — the krekhts, the kvetch, the flatted seventh howl — as expressive techniques with specific emotional and cultural meaning rather than as curiosities. Cajun violin is taught with strong emphasis on the rhythmic drive and ornamental style characteristic of the American Gulf Coast tradition, and I use field recordings alongside commercial recordings to connect students to the living community of Cajun musicians. Balkan rhythms — the asymmetric meters of 7/8, 11/8, and 9/8 — are taught as felt rhythms first through clapping, stomping, and singing before any violin is involved, because the body must understand these rhythms before the bow can express them. Gypsy jazz violin is addressed as a distinct and demanding jazz violin style with its own ornamentation, improvisation approach, and repertoire. Improvisation in world music contexts is taught as stylistic vocabulary development — students learn the scales, modes, and ornamental cells characteristic of each tradition. I provide cultural and historical context for each tradition as an integral part of the curriculum because music cannot be authentically played without understanding the culture that produced it. My teaching goal is a violinist who can sit in any session from Dublin to Thessaloniki and speak the musical language.
