I qualified as an International Senior Chinese Teacher in 2015 and have also taught several students of all ages these years. I use different teaching methods for beginners, intermediates and advanced students.
For Beginners:
Pinyin-Based Approach: Beginners often start by learning Pinyin, which is the romanization system for Chinese characters. This method focuses on teaching the pronunciation and tones of Mandarin Chinese using the Latin alphabet. It helps students familiarize themselves with the sounds of the language and provides a foundation for learning characters.
TPR (Total Physical Response): This method incorporates physical movement and gestures to reinforce language learning. Beginners follow instructions in Chinese, such as "Stand up" or "Sit down," and respond with the appropriate actions. TPR encourages comprehension and helps beginners associate words with actions, making the learning process more interactive.
Immersion: Immersion programs create an environment where learners are surrounded by Chinese language and culture. This approach exposes beginners to Chinese vocabulary and phrases in authentic contexts, enhancing listening and speaking skills. This may include activities like role-playing, language games, and cultural events.
For Intermediate Learners:
Integrated Approach: Intermediate learners focus on expanding vocabulary and grammar skills. This approach integrates the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to reinforce comprehension and communication. Learners engage in conversations, read texts, and practice writing, building their overall proficiency.
Task-Based Learning: It encourages learners to complete specific tasks or projects using Chinese. Intermediate students are given real-life situations or challenges to solve, which require them to use their language skills.
Multimedia and Authentic Materials: Intermediate learners benefit from using a variety of multimedia resources such as videos, podcasts, news articles, and social media content. These materials expose them to different registers of the language, cultural nuances, and contemporary topics, helping them develop a deeper understanding of Chinese language and society.
For Advanced Learners:
Content-Based Instruction: Advanced learners delve into specific topics of interest, such as literature, history, politics, or economics. It employs authentic materials related to these subjects, enabling learners to develop specialized vocabulary, critical analysis skills, and cultural insights. Discussions, debates, and research projects are used duting this stage.
Language Exchange or Tandem Learning: It facilitates language practice and cultural exchange through conversations and activities with me. Advanced learners can refine their language skills, expand their cultural knowledge, and gain confidence in real-life communication.
Translation and Interpretation: This stage focuses on advanced language skills by emphasizing translation and interpretation exercises. Learners work on translating written texts from Chinese to their native language and vice versa.
