About Top
With over twenty-five years of experience in secondary and higher education, I bring both expertise and practical instruction to help students excel in reading and writing. Throughout my teaching career, I’ve taught Honors, Advanced Placement, and General Education English courses at top-ranked high schools in Southern California and Idaho. During this time, I have had the privilege of helping thousands of students achieve college-level proficiency in analysis, argument, and creative expression. I hold a B.A. in English Literature, a Single Subject English Teaching Credential, and an M.A. in Education. In 2014, I founded TOP Writing Academy LLC, an online resource for literacy instruction. Since then, TOP Writing Academy has provided more than 25,000 lesson plans to teachers nationwide, and my reading and writing programs have supported thousands of students in hundreds of schools. I specialize in personalized instruction that builds confidence, clarity, and academic excellence. My goal is to help students not only succeed in their academic pursuits but also appreciate the lifelong value of effective written and spoken communication. As a secondary English teacher with over twenty years of classroom experience, my tutoring approach focuses on guiding students to think deeply, write clearly, and express their authentic voice with confidence. Each session is tailored to the student’s specific needs—whether related to a current assignment, preparation for the SAT or ACT, or general improvement in reading and writing skills. My techniques and resources are adaptable and effective across all genres of writing and literature. A typical lesson includes a quick diagnostic or warm-up, a focused skill lesson with modeling, and guided practice using the student’s current coursework or customized materials. What sets me apart is my ability to recognize students’ strengths and weaknesses and adjust lessons in real time to help them reach their goals. My lessons are designed for middle and high school students preparing for academic writing, standardized tests, or enrichment beyond the classroom.
