When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I developed an interest in my chosen field during my studies, especially as I recognized the impact of a clear explanation on understanding complex concepts. I began tutoring privately to share my passion for these subjects with others and help them overcome challenges that I personally had to work through.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach English, Probability (Statistics), and Accounting. In English, I enjoy doing case studies , writing techniques, and improving communication skills. In Statistics, I like to dive into probability distributions, conditional probability, and expected value. Accounting is fascinating, especially topics like financial statements, audit and budgeting. While I enjoy these areas, the more technical, number-heavy topics of Accounting can sometimes be a little less exciting for students who find them abstract.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Yes, I had a few teachers who inspired me, particularly in the areas of Statistics and Accounting. Their passion for the subject and their ability to make challenging concepts more digestible made a lasting impact on me and helped guide my decision to tutor others in these fields.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
A good tutor needs patience, clear communication, empathy, and adaptability. It's important to understand where each student struggles and tailor your approach to their learning style. Passion for the subject and the ability to make complex ideas more accessible also play a big role in making the learning experience enjoyable and effective.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
One memorable moment was when I helped a student struggling with the concept of expected values in statistics. We broke the problem down into smaller, more manageable steps, and by the end of our session, they had not only understood the concept but felt confident enough to apply it to real-world scenarios. It was a proud moment for both of us.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
In statistics, it can be difficult for students to visualize abstract concepts like distributions and probabilities, and in accounting, the challenge is often in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. I continually work on simplifying these concepts and finding relatable examples to make them more engaging.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
My passion lies in both teaching and the subjects themselves. I love helping students achieve that "aha" moment when everything clicks. Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but I also have a deep passion for the analytical side of statistics and the logical flow of accounting principles.
