About James
I've taught CWL 202: Introduction to Creative Writing for three years and have taught CWL 305: Forms of Fiction with mainly upperclassmen (see my Classie Evals page for Stony Brook University!) I work with each student individually to build their writing style and skill from the ground up. Everyone has incredible fiction and nonfiction pieces to share, it's just a matter of refining your style and technique to bring those pieces out!

I help students discover their writing style and build their skills in both fiction and nonfiction composition--whether it's a creative idea that you'd like to turn into a manuscript, a college application essay, or building your skills in written expression, I'll work with you one on one to help you accomplish your goals!
I teach CWL 202: Introduction to Creative Writing at Stony Brook University and help my students take initial ideas from one or two bullet points to completed final drafts ready to be submitted to publications. On the technical level, I assist with spelling/grammar/style/structure mechanics and refining rough drafts line by line until they represent the exact tone and artistic expression intended by the creator. I like to remind my students that nonfiction writing (application essays, memoir, cover letters) are just as much creative pieces as high fantasy or mystery could be--it all comes down to style!
I have lesson plans from both my CWL 202 course and my 300-level upperclassman course that focused on Horror/Thriller fiction writing, but I also work with students piece by piece on writing of any tone and genre!
