My teaching methods are to break it down to the basics. i.e If you don't understand addition then how can you understand subtraction? Mathematics and science are essentially just growing towers of knowledge and if you don't have a base then you can't build a tower. It is key for a student to know all the knowledge prior to what they are learning and they will have a hard time understanding the material if they don't know what its based off of.
