About Derek
My name is Derek, and my most defining quality is that I love to learn new things. This extends to helping others to navigate through their problem areas and even learning something new from them sometimes. I have an intensive love of all disciplines within mathematics and statistics and hope that through hard work and dedication that I can make a difference in many students' lives. I have roughly two years of tutoring experience in major disciplines of mathematics and statistics, which include calculus, probability theory, logic, and operations research.
Additionally, I have played cello for 16 years at level 6 NYSSMA, as well as bass and guitar for 10 years across multiple bands spanning different genres. I am highly proficient in songwriting within rock, pop, metal, alternative, etc. and have high capability in teaching string technique, sight singing, and musical literacy. I have taught several students in varying disciplines over the past several years. With experience in Chamber and Pit orchestra and branching out to new instruments, I maintain full confidence in my abilities. I try to always make a point of validating my knowledge and guidance to the fullest extent; because of my affinity and desire for learning, I am always actively seeking to better myself personally and for the sake of my students.
After I received my BS in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook University, I began tutoring independently in order to apply my mathematical skills towards my career goal of becoming a college professor and practicing data scientist. I have experience teaching for Mathnasium, contracting for Varsity Tutors, and providing expert tutoring and Q&A through Wyzant. I currently offer both private in-person and online sessions. I am currently working towards the MS Applied Data Science degree online from the University of San Diego and plan on tutoring 10-20 private students at a time. My teaching method is based on socratic oral communication and questioning, along with reinforcement of related mathematical areas, ensuring students succeed in the highly cumulative field of mathematics and statistics. I offer all disciplines and address the students specific areas of strength and weakness before tailoring my approach.
