  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

My passion for music, especially the piano, developed when I was a child. I remember being captivated by the range of expression the piano offered—from soft, delicate tones to powerful, resonant sounds. Over time, my love for the instrument grew as I delved into its complexities, eventually leading me to teach and perform at Istanbul State Conservatory and Bowling Green State University, where I continue to explore the piano’s endless possibilities.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I can listen to the works of Debussy and Ravel on a loop without ever feeling tired. Their compositions for the piano are not only technically challenging but also rich in texture and emotion. The way they use the piano to evoke colors, light, and atmosphere is something I find endlessly inspiring, and each listen brings something new.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

A fascinating course I could offer is on advanced piano techniques and interpretation. This course would explore not just the technical aspects of mastering difficult pieces, but also how to interpret complex emotions and nuances within the music. We would delve deep into finger technique, phrasing, dynamics, and articulation, studying works from composers like Chopin and Liszt, pushing the student’s expressive boundaries.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I believe the piano is one of the most complicated instruments to master. While it may seem straightforward at first glance, the depth of control required over dynamics, articulation, and pedaling—along with the coordination of both hands—makes it incredibly challenging. Moreover, the pianist must interpret complex harmonies and melodies simultaneously, often requiring an advanced understanding of theory and technique.
  • What are your keys to success?

Patience, attention to detail, and consistency are my keys to success. Mastering the piano takes years of dedicated practice, and I encourage my students to focus not just on playing the notes, but on truly understanding the music. Breaking down difficult passages, practicing mindfully, and continually refining technique are essential. Also, fostering a love for the instrument is key—I aim to make lessons both productive and enjoyable.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Clara Schumann: I admire her virtuosic piano playing and her ability to balance life as a composer, performer, and mother. I’d love to talk about her approach to the piano and her performances of Robert Schumann’s works.
Frédéric Chopin: His music is the pinnacle of expressive piano composition, and I’d love to discuss his views on technique and emotional depth in piano performance.
Vladimir Horowitz: One of the greatest pianists of all time, I’d be fascinated to hear about his approach to tackling the most difficult pieces in the piano repertoire.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

While teaching piano at Istanbul State Conservatory, I had a student who struggled with fast, technical passages in Chopin’s Etudes. I introduced slow, deliberate practice techniques with exaggerated hand movements, which allowed the student to build muscle memory and confidence. Within weeks, they could play the piece fluently at full speed. This experience reinforced the importance of slow practice and attention to detail—techniques I still emphasize in my lessons today.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

What makes me a Superprof in piano is my holistic approach to teaching. I don’t just focus on technical proficiency; I work with my students to develop their musicality, expression, and confidence on the piano. I incorporate a personalized practice plan tailored to each student’s level and goals, ensuring steady progress. Additionally, I offer a free introductory lesson to understand the student’s needs, allowing us to form a clear path to success from the very beginning.
